February 5th is National Girls and Women in Sports Day—a time to celebrate the brilliant, strong, and downright unstoppable women in sport. And if there’s one sport where women have truly taken centre stage, it’s gymnastics.
Over the years, female gymnasts have defied gravity, broken records, and redefined what’s humanly possible. Some have set the bar (quite literally) for the sport, while others have inspired millions simply by being fearless.
So, in honour of the day, let’s take a look at some gymnastics legends, why gymnastics is such a brilliant sport for girls, and how it builds confidence, resilience, and a pretty impressive set of abs.
The Gymnastics Icons Who Changed the Game
These are the women who flipped, twisted, and tumbled their way into the history books—and straight into our hearts.
Beth Tweddle (UK) – The Trailblazer 🇬🇧
Before Beth Tweddle came along, British gymnastics was… well, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly dominating the world stage. Then Beth arrived, swung her way around the uneven bars, and suddenly, Team GB was on the map.
🏅 Achievements:
✔️ Britain’s first World Champion in gymnastics
✔️ Six-time European Champion
✔️ 2012 Olympic Bronze Medallist (Uneven Bars)
Beth paved the way for the likes of Ellie Downie and Jessica Gadirova, proving that British gymnasts could take on the best—and win.
Simone Biles (USA) – The GOAT (Greatest of All Time) 🐐
If you’ve heard of one gymnast, it’s probably Simone Biles. She’s rewritten gymnastics history, invented moves that no one else dares to try, and still has time to be an advocate for mental health in sport.
🏅 Achievements:
✔️ 7 Olympic medals (including 4 golds)
✔️ 25 World Championship medals (19 gold!)
✔️ Lands skills so difficult they’ve been named after her
Simone has raised the standard of gymnastics to ridiculous levels, making the impossible look effortless.
Nadia Comăneci (Romania) – The Perfectionist 🔟
Before 1976, getting a perfect score in gymnastics was just a dream. Then Nadia Comăneci rocked up to the Olympics, casually scored the first-ever Perfect 10, and left everyone speechless.
🏅 Achievements:
✔️ 5 Olympic Gold Medals
✔️ First gymnast to score a perfect 10
✔️ Changed gymnastics forever
She set the standard for elegance, precision, and making difficult skills look far too easy.
Ellie Downie (UK) – The Powerhouse 🇬🇧
Ellie Downie made history as the first British gymnast to win an all-around title at a major European competition. That’s a pretty big deal.
🏅 Achievements:
✔️ 2017 European All-Around Champion
✔️ 2016 Olympian
✔️ Commonwealth and World Championship medallist
Her power and fearless routines have made her one of Britain’s most exciting gymnasts.
Jessica & Jennifer Gadirova (UK) – The Future of British Gymnastics 🇬🇧
Twins Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova are part of the next generation of British gymnastics brilliance. Their energy, style, and insane skill levels have made them fan favourites.
🏅 Achievements:
✔️ Jessica Gadirova – 2022 World Floor Champion
✔️ Both sisters – 2020 Olympic Team Bronze Medallists
✔️ European and World Championship stars
Safe to say, British gymnastics is in good hands.
Why Gymnastics is the Perfect Sport for Girls
Let’s be real—gymnastics isn’t just about learning cool flips (although that’s a major bonus). It’s also a sport that teaches life skills, builds confidence, and gives you the kind of strength most people only dream of.
1. It Builds Confidence 💪
Mastering a new skill after weeks of face-planting? That’s a confidence boost like no other.
2. Strength & Flexibility for Life 🏋️♀️
You don’t just get stronger—you get bendier, faster, and more coordinated. All very useful life skills.
3. A Supportive Community 👭
Gymnastics isn’t just an individual sport. You train together, cheer each other on, and make friends for life.
4. It Opens Doors 🚀
Whether it’s competing, coaching, or even stunt work, gymnastics teaches skills that last a lifetime.
Encouraging More Girls into Gymnastics
While women’s gymnastics is thriving, there’s always room to encourage more young girls to get involved. Here’s how we can help:
✔️ Show them strong female role models
✔️ Make gymnastics accessible—support local clubs
✔️ Focus on progress, not perfection
At Wickers Gymnastics Club, we love seeing young gymnasts grow in confidence, skill, and strength—whether they’re training for fun or dreaming of competitions.
