In a surprising turn of events, David Kenwright, the head coach of British Gymnastics' Women’s Artistic Gymnastics team, has announced his resignation just three months before the Paris Olympics. Since joining the governing body in 2017, Kenwright has been a pivotal figure in the sport, leading the team to historical successes and undoubtedly leaving his mark on British gymnastics.

Kenwright's Legacy

Under Kenwright’s leadership, Team GB clinched their first women's Olympic team medal in nearly a century at the Tokyo 2020 Games, a monumental achievement that ended a 92-year wait. The following year, the team continued their ascent under his guidance, securing a first-ever world silver medal and, most recently, a gold at the European Championships in 2023.

These achievements highlight not only Kenwright’s capability as a coach but also his profound impact on elevating the standard and visibility of British women’s gymnastics on the global stage.

The Road to Paris 2024

As the gymnastics community looks towards the Paris 2024 Olympics, starting on 27 July, the departure of such a key figure could be seen as a setback. However, British Gymnastics is poised to continue its pursuit of excellence. Tracy Whittaker-Smith, the performance director for Olympic disciplines, alongside Scott Hann, technical adviser, are set to take the helm. Their extensive experience and expertise will be crucial in guiding the team through this transitional period and into the Games.

Kenwright’s Parting Words

Reflecting on his tenure, Kenwright expressed his affection for the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics community, praising the "amazing gymnasts, the talented and dedicated coaches, and a great technical committee." He acknowledged the collective achievements, stating, "We’ve achieved a lot together that we can all be immensely proud of and that will have a lasting positive impact for our sport and all those in it."

Looking Forward

As the gymnastics world bids farewell to a respected leader, British Gymnastics has expressed gratitude towards Kenwright for his "extensive contribution" over the past seven years. The governing body has also confirmed that a new coaching team for the upcoming Olympics will be announced in the coming months, ensuring that the legacy and momentum built under Kenwright’s tenure will continue.

This pivotal moment for British Gymnastics is not just an end but a new beginning. With strong leadership in place and a team rich in talent and ambition, the future looks promising as the focus shifts to achieving greatness in Paris and beyond.
